What You Should Look For in a Criminal Defense Attorney

What You Should Look For in a Criminal Defense Attorney

Posted on May 28, 2020 by Accel Admin

If you are facing criminal charges, you are most likely now considering hiring a criminal defense attorney. This is a wise choice, as, without one, you are at great risk of facing the harsh ramifications of your charges. However, it is not simply enough to hire just any attorney who tells you he or she practices criminal law. You need an attorney who meets several qualifications so you can feel confident that he will provide you with the best legal avenue forward. Here are some of the questions you should ask any prospective attorney and yourself before making your selection:

  • Does he primarily practice criminal law? Most attorneys will be more than happy to take your case. However, this does not mean that they are the best-fit attorney to do so. That is why, first and foremost, you should ensure your attorney primarily practices criminal law. You wouldn’t hire a plumber to fix your car; don’t hire a PI attorney to handle your criminal case.
  • Can the attorney answer your questions? The law is complicated. There are certain intricacies that all attorneys will have to look up from time to time. However, your attorney should be able to answer all of your basic concerns, as well as have an idea of the potential consequences of your case. For example, if you are charged with theft, your attorney should know how to fight those charges and understand the potential consequences of those charges.
  • Is the attorney familiar with the local court system? Of course, the law is the law, and that does not change. However, different courts function differently, which is why it is critical you hire an attorney that is familiar with the area.
  • Does your attorney have good online reviews? In today’s day and age, nearly every business has online reviews, which is perhaps the best way to gauge that business’s services. Our firm maintains a nearly 5-star rating on Google, a testament to our effort, knowledge, and skill.
  • Are you comfortable with your attorney? Of course, knowledge of the law is critical, however, you should also feel comfortable with your attorney, and you should trust that your attorney will always have your best interests in mind.
